I haven’t really gotten the chance to test any of them with other people but calling myself on jitsi browser to phone worked well. Tox doesn’t have many iOS clients (or an official one) which is my preferred mobile platform. Jami (a descendent of Gnu ring) seems like it might make a good alternative for calling friends but it might be weird for most not registering an account (I would advise a new user to specifically not register their account keeping it local and then share their id and scheduling the call on some other platform since I suspect it requires that all users are online). It also has no requirement for an account but by default only requires the meeting id (four random words by default) to join and while a password can be added people might not bother making it secure. Jitsi meet (specifically) seems to effectively mimic many of it’s features, but I couldn’t find a desktop client (though it seems to run well in the browser, the desktop client I found is in fact something else though related and is losing support). And since Jitsi doesn't do E2EE in multiparty video conf, Matrix doesn't either. All it does is embed a Jitsi client that talks to a Jitsi server. The reason why Matrix doesn't do E2EE is that it doesn't actually do the video conf itself (see above). That's not really the reason why Matrix video conf isn't E2EE.

You're actually just opening a Jitsi web page.Īnother thing here that needs to be cleared up is that "E2EE can't be done with Jitsi because of WebRTC". You're practically just opening a web page of Google Docs within Riot. You're not automatically getting E2EE just because you're accessing Google Docs via Matrix. You could do the same with things like accessing Etherpad (collaborative editing), YouTube, and Google Docs with Matrix widgets. In this case, Jitsi, or more specifically, if you're using the official server, the Jitsi instance ran by 8x8 on.

you're just bridging it to another software via webapp glue. It used to, but since 2017 they've basically made video conferencing a Matrix widget, i.e. So first we need to clear up a misconception here, which is that Matrix/Riot does its own video conferencing.
